How to Clean a Screened-In Porch
You've finally achieved your dream of having a beautiful Sunspace screen room added to your home, and it's your new favorite place to relax, host gatherings, and enjoy family time, but wait! What's that yellow powder collecting everywhere? Oh, that's just pollen, and it doesn't have to spoil your space. Simply follow our easy steps to keeping a clean screened-in porch.
Five Steps to Cleaning Your Screen Room
Start from the top and move down. No matter the room, for a good thorough cleaning, starting from the highest level and moving toward the floor is the best procedure, and a screened-in porch is no different. If you have lighting, hanging plants, shelves, or other tall furniture, you'll want to start by dusting them with a clean, lint-free cloth. Then move to any seats, tables, or shorter furniture you have. During pollen season, dampening your cloth will help trap the pollen.
Clean the screens. Are you wondering how to clean your porch screens? If you have a vacuum you think can handle fine powdery pollen, you may want to start by using a soft brush attachment to trap any loose pollen from the screens. Otherwise, just use a gentle solution of a mild detergent, such as Dawn dish soap, and warm water – about a quarter-cup of cleaner in a bucket of water should do it. Although, you may need to replace the solution once or twice depending on the size of your screen room. Wipe the inside and the outside of the screens down using a lint-free cloth. Then, rinse the screens with clean water, and allow them to air-dry.
Vacuum or sweep the floor. Again, you may have a strong vacuum that can handle pollen, but if you don't, using a broom works fine. The idea is to remove the loose pollen from the floor as easily as possible. You'll likely notice that this step doesn't completely remove all of the yellow stuff from your floor, but that's okay. We've got that covered in the next step.
Mop the floor. There's nothing like a good old-fashioned mop to get the job done, but feel free to use one of the fancier new models. The point is water and whatever gentle cleaner that works best with your floor is needed to remove the rest of that yellow residue. It may take a little elbow grease, but the sparkle is worth it.
Inspect the corners. Your last step is to take a good look at the corners and edges of the room. You may find some stubborn pollen clinging where the mop couldn't reach. If so, your trusty damp cloth will help you put the finishing touches on your freshly cleaned screened porch.
Now, sit back and enjoy that space once again. If you make a habit of wiping things off regularly, you may only need to do one good deep clean like this at the end of pollen season.
